Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.
These are comonly used to restore a tooth when it is severly broken down, weak, or has had other complex dental proceedures and thus needs protection. Crowns are often porcelain, of various types, or have a metal substructure, or are completely metal like gold or other precious metals. in general, while the tooth or teeth are numb, a certain amount of tooth is removed, about 1mm from each surface. An impression, or mould, is taken and from that a custom made crown is made which is bonded to the tooth at the next appointment. You will have a comfortable temporary crown to protect your tooth in the meantime.
Dental crowns can often be used for cosmetic and/or structural reasons. Below is an example of two crowns on molar teeth on the model which is made from the impression of your teeth.
Fully porcelain crowns like this front tooth crown below are cosmetic crowns which have properties that make the crown very 'life-like'. Modern all-porcelain crowns can be extremely strong while also being as translucent and reflective as your natural tooth and can 'disappear' into the rest of your smile like a natural tooth or can fully transform your smile. These crowns are bonded to your teeth after your dentist has carefully prepared the tooth to receive the crown.
Porcelain Veneers are thin faces that are bonded to the front of the tooth to alter shape, position, appearance, colour etc. The tooth is often reduced by about 0.5mm in most cases thus making these an irreversible procedure but can make a dramatic improvement to the appearance of the tooth/teeth. The diagram below shows the thin face of porcelain fitted to the tooth.
